About the workshop

Each day, our minds have about 60,000 thoughts. Many of these thoughts are repeated, and up to 90% are the same thoughts we had the day before. But do you know what you are actually thinking? And could this be adding to your daily stress and anxiety? Research shows that negative self-talk or the inner critic can not only make managing stress more difficult, but that these thoughts could themselves be an actual cause of stress, producing emotional and physical repercussions. Thoughts, especially those that occur when we are on automatic pilot, are made up of and shaped by unconscious processes of previous experience, conditioning and learnt belief systems. These are often so habitual and automatic that we barely notice their presence. This can be problematic when we consider that the parts of the brain that run subconsciously cannot differentiate between reality and fiction, i.e., what you are telling yourself.

How able you are to perceive and appraise an event or situation plays an important part in how well you can adapt and respond to stress. Sometimes our thinking itself can remove us from reality, from what's actually happening around us, overwhelm our perception and cause us to lose our connection to the present. These patterns are learnt ways of being and reacting, but what is learnt can be unlearnt, giving way to adopting new, more helpful habits.

The key method for successfully managing stress is to understand what we are actually going through. This is best achieved through developing a capacity to be able to see our experience in it fullest. To see not just a stressor but also how we relate to it and if, through our thinking, you may be adding to the stress.
